Course overview
What this year covers
The second year of a language is where a student stops describing the present and starts telling what happened. Unit 1 reviews the first year in seven lessons so that nothing later rests on a forgotten ending. Unit 2 takes the preterite all the way: spelling changes, the irregular stems, the boot verbs in the third person, and the indirect object pronouns that turn up in almost every sentence about giving, telling and showing. Units 3 and 4 are the center of the course: the imperfect, and then the decision between the preterite and the imperfect, taught as a decision about the frame of an event, not as a list of signal words. Unit 5 is health and the commands, which let a student give advice, directions and instructions politely and informally. Unit 6 takes travel and the city, with por and para and the negative words. Unit 7 is home, daily life and the impersonal se, with stressed possessives and demonstrative pronouns. Unit 8 is technology and work, and teaches the present perfect. Unit 9 looks ahead with the future, the conditional and the real si clause, and gives the student the language of opinion. Unit 10 covers celebrations, the arts, reading strategies, adverbs and connectors, so that sentences join into paragraphs. Unit 11 gathers the year into conversations, a written narrative, a look at Spanish in California, and a final presentation. Every lesson opens with the method, names the specific error that costs the marks, works an example in eight steps, and gives ten practice problems with complete answers. There is no audio, so the course asks the student to read every Spanish example aloud.
